WarnerMedia announced that from 2022 it will no longer broadcast the matches of the Brasileirao soccer championship, after three years in the business. Until the end of 2021, the games will continue to be televised through TNT Sports, its Pay TV signals TNT and Space and its OTTs Estadio TNT Sports and HBO Max.
In 2019, the company had managed to broadcast the tournament games through a pay TV contract with seven of the 20 participating teams, valid until 2024. In addition, it was the first to break with the dominance that the Brazilian company Globo had in televising the competition.
However, three years before the deal expired, WarnerMedia announced the suspension of broadcasts, explaining that the issue that drove the decision was the inability to offer content exclusivity to its customers. “The decision was made because the fragmented broadcast offer of the Brazilian soccer championship does not allow the company to provide a comprehensive experience to its subscribers. With the sale pulverized for open TV signal and other platforms, in addition to limiting factors such as the lack of exclusive games and blackouts, the current model is not sustainable for the company”, it was explained in a statement.
After the resignation of WarnerMedia, the teams of Palmeiras, Santos, Athletico Paranaense, Juventude, Bahia, Ceará and Fortaleza were left without a transmission contract for 2022, so they will be able to negotiate their rights from that period, under the mandate of the new Mandatory sports broadcasting law.
