Uruguay ends 2020 with almost 645 thousand pay TV subscribers and DirecTV as the leading operator

According to the information officially reported by the Uruguayan Unidad Reguladora de Servicios de Comunicaciones (URSEC), entity in charge of regulating Uruguay’s telecommunications market, the country ended 2020 with 644,620 pay TV subscribers. The reported figure showed a growth of 5,812 subscribers in relation to June 2020, when 638,808 clients were informed. Likewise, with regard to December 2019, the market showed an almost 34,5 thousand subscribers decrease.

The information reported by URSEC evidences that the Uruguayan departments with the highest number of pay TV subscribers as of December 2020 were Montevideo (almost 232 thousand subscribers); Canelones (105.8 thousand); and Maldonado (49.1 thousand). Likewise, the leading operator in terms of pay TV subscribers as of December 31st in the country was DirecTV, with 196.9 thousand clients.

On the other hand, the technology with the greatest pay TV access in Uruguay between June and December 2020 was coaxial cable, which represents 52.9% of the market share in the country (just over 341 thousand subscribers), followed by DTH, which, in this case, represents 44.1% of pay TV accesses, with 284.6 thousand subscribers. The remaining 2.94% (18.9 thousand subscribers)  pay TV accesses were made via MMDS.
