Tigo adds FUTV to is programming grid and starts offering Tigo Sports to pay TV operators in Costa Rica

Telecommunications company Millicom, which operates in Latin America under the ‘Tigo’ brand, announced this Thursday that it is already offering the FUTV channel, officially launched in late February, as part of its TV channels catalog , with which it shares the rights to broadcast the Costa Rican Professional Football League through its sports channel, Tigo Sports.

In addition, the company reported that it will make Tigo Sports available to the rest of Costa Rican pay TV operators, since, until now, the channel was exclusively accessible for Tigo’s customers. This way, all pay TV operators in the country will be able to include the two TV channels that broadcast the Costa Rican Professional Football League, which has already resumed its schedule after an interruption due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The agreement between Tigo and FUTV was implemented after several months of negotiations. During these last months, Tigo sued FUTV at the Competition Promotion Commission (Coprocom) for the refusal of the new channel to allow it to air  the matches of seven football teams in the country, although, days ago, the Millicom subsidiary in Costa Rica reported that, in case of coming to terms with FUTV, it would be willing to include the TV channel on its grid and offering Tigo Sports to other pay TV operators in the country. This way, FUTV is now available on Tigo’s pay TV plans, both for cable and DTH clients.

Tigo owns the rights to air local football matches played by Asociación Deportiva San Carlos; Santos de Guápiles; Asociación Deportiva Jicaral; Guadalupe Fútbol Club y Sporting Football Club; while FUTV has the rights to broadcast matches that Deportivo Saprissa, Liga Deportiva Alajuelense, Club Sport Herediano, Club Sport Cartagines, AD Grecia, Asociacion Deportiva Municipal Perez Zeledon and Limón FC play, also as local teams. After the addition of FUTV on Tigo’s grid, Sky (Televisa and AT&T) is now the only operator that does not offer the channel in Costa Rica.
