Thema America, a Canal+ Group company, announced that Telemicro Internacional will broadcast selected matches of the Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (LIDOM). The League consists of six teams, representing different cities of the Caribbean country. Some of its players are stars of the US major and minor leagues, and other Dominican players, who also play for teams in Japan and Mexico.
‘For baseball fans around the world, the Dominican Winter Baseball League season is very important, one of the country’s key events’, said Patrick Rivet, CEO at Thema America, a market leader in distribution of thematic channels, which represents Telemicro Internacional. ‘The months in which the League is taking place are busy ones for fans in the Dominican Republic. They live and enjoy the season as much as they can. There are sporting events and celebrations throughout the country that attract thousands of spectators and a large captive audience, which loves live sports broadcasts’, he added.
The League, which is also known as the ‘Dominican Winter Baseball League’, the ‘Dominican Professional Baseball League’, or just the ‘Dominican League’, consists of teams that follow a regular league schedule. This year’s season is starting with an opening match between the Leones del Escogido and the Tigres del Licey, which took place last Saturday, October 12th, and ends on December 17th.
Four teams will qualify for the playoffs, which consist of a round robin tournament in the first three weeks of January, in which each team plays 18 games. The top two teams then play a best-five-of-seven final series for the championship. The winning team will represent the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Series against the champions of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Venezuela.
During the regular season, Telemicro Internacional will have a full broadcast schedule, including programs that feature analysis, debate, information and interviews with fans. The channel can be watched on Optimum, XFINITY, Sling, RCN, Verizon FiOS, Frontier, and others. In 2017, Telemicro acquired the rights for exclusive broadcasts of all matches between the Tigres del Licey and the Águilas Cibaeñas.
