Telefonica to stop marketing its DTH offer in El Salvador on April 30th

Telecommunications company Telefonica, whose operations in Latin America are known under the ‘Movistar’ brand, reported through an announcement to its clients that, as of the end of April, it will stop marketing its DTH offer in El Salvador, where it is called ‘Movistar TV’.

‘As you know, our pay TV service is delivered through a satellite operated by a third party abroad. Unfortunately, we have been notified that it will not be possible to renew this service for Central America. As of this notification, it is impossible for us to continue offering Movistar TV to our clients, so this service will not be provided anymore as of April 30yh, 2021’, the company officially reported. Movistar’s DTH offering in El Salvador is delivered through the SES 10 (67.0 ° W) satellite, originally launched in 2017.

Telefonica made the announcement after having agreed to sell Movistar El Salvador to America Movil, although the transaction was canceled in September last year  after the Salvadoran Competence Superintendece,  regulatory entity in El Salvador, established a series of requirements and the companies decided not to go ahead with the process.  In addition, Telefonica has also sold its operations in Panama and Nicaragua to Millicom; in Guatemala to America Movil; and in Costa Rica to Liberty Latin America.

On January 24th, 2019, America Movil announced an agreement with Telefpnica for the acquisition of 99.3% of Movistar El Salvador. Under the original terms of the agreement, the transaction was valued at USD 315 million.
