The Brazilian OTT Guigo TV announced it is interested in televising the matches that the Brazilian National Team plays outside the country in the Qualifying rounds for the next Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup, recently postponed by the Covid-19 pandemic (Coronavirus). Until now, Globo was the only FTA TV broadcaster interested in these rights.
As a new rule for the qualifying rounds to be played, each national football federation can negotiate the rights of their local matches. In October 2017, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) reported in an official statement that the Globo Group had exclusively acquired the broadcasting rights of the Brazilian National Team matches on pay TV, FTA TV and PPV, from November that year to December 2022. The agreement covers all the matches of the Qualifying rounds that the Brazilian National Team plays in the country during the Qualifying rounds to Qatar 2022, and the friendly matches that are played in any country in the period 2017 -2022. In addition, Globo also acquired the rights to broadcast the matches on digital platforms in September 2017.
As reported by the specialized website UOL Esporte, Guigo TV asked the national football federations about the values and conditions to broadcast the matches that the Brazilian National Team plays outside the country. According to the Brazilian website, the sale of these football matches would not take place individually, but rather packaged. In other words, all the matches that the Brazilian National Team plays outside the country would be sold. However, UOL reported the prices of matches separately, and informed that each match played by the country’s National Team in Brazil would cost USD 2.5 million, while those in which the Brazilian National Team does not intervene would cost USD 1 million each.
At the moment, according to UOL, Guigo TV is studying negotiations to run an agreement and develop an advertising agreement to advertisers. Apart from that, Globo, confirmed that, in addition to the matches of the Brazilian National Team in the country, it will have the exclusive broadcasting rights of the match between Brazil and Argentina, to be played soon in Argentine territory, because of the the Qualifiers for Qatar 2022.
