As a way of going on with its international expansion process, Globoplay, Brazilian Globo Group’s SVOD OTT, will be launched in Europe. As reported by Erick Bretas, Director of the Group, during an interview with the specialized website Deadline, the launch will take place before the end of the year, and there are plans for the platform to also be available globally, after having been launched in the US, in early 2020.
Likewise, one of the aims of the platform’s European expansion is focused on meeting the Brazilians living abroad needs, making them access to Globo content through Globoplay easier.
Bretas also highlighted intentions to create partnerships with other local OTTs to exchange and co-produce content. ‘There are other very strong regional platforms, like Stan in Australia; Joyn in Germany; or iFlix in Southeast Asia. The idea is to strengthen our relationships by exchanging content, or, in some cases, co-producing together’, said the executive.
According to Bretas, the number of subscribers to Globoplay grew 89% compared to 2019 figures. Currently, the OTT is preparing 82 original productions, which are in a production stage. The platform was launched in Brazil in 2015, and has been strengthening its catalog with original titles and international content. Recently, it has ran an agreement with the Canadian studio Entertainment One to release three of its titles exclusively in Brazil.
