Globo cancels Brazilian football TV rights payments until competitions resume

Globo announced through a statement sent to the São Paulo Football Federation (FPF) that it will not make the last fee payment on the São Paulo Championship TV rights, whose development is stopped due to the Covid-19 pandemic (Coronavirus).

‘In view of the 2020 Paulista Championship stop for an uncertain period due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we report that, as a precautionary measure, we are not making the payment of the last championship fee, scheduled for April 5th, 2020, as long as the current uncertainty about the impacts of the pandemic on the total or effective development of the competition persists’, is reported in part of the document, quoted by UOL Esporte.

In addition, Brazilian media informs that Globo would take the same measure with the Carioca Championship (Rio de Janeiro) and the Bahian Championship (Bahia). In the cases of the Mineiro Championship (Minas Gerais) and the Gaucho Championship (Río Grande do Sul), payments were made in advance. Globo broadcasts the already mentioned tournaments through Globo TV on FTA TV, SporTV on pay TV, Globo Esporte through the internet, its PPV Premiere system and the OTT Premiere Play.

In the case of the Paranaense Championship, whose rights were recently acquired by DAZN, the platform warned that it will not pay for events that it could not broadcast, so the competition would not be put on air.
