According to what the Ecuadorian Agencia de Regulacion y Control de Telecomunicaciones (Arcotel) has officially reported, the country ended Q3 2020 with 946.9 thousand pay TV subscribers. With this figure, and after several consecutive quarters in decline, Ecuador’s pay TV subscribers base is below one million clients, a fact that had not happened since 2013, when the country recorded 943,565 subscribers.
According to Arcotel’s report, the fall in pay TV subscribers in Ecuador has been taking place since Q2 2018. At that time, there were just over 1.3 million subscribers. Likewise, Ecuador ended Q1 2020 with 1,094 million subscribers. For June, the country experienced a decline in subscribers again, ending Q2 with 1,006 million, to finally end Q3 with the already mentioned 946.9 thousand customers.
In terms of market share, as of September 2020, DirecTV continues to lead, with 38.83% of the pay TV market. It is followed by CNT, with 26.49%; and TVCable (SETEL S.A.), with 14.48%. Likewise, Univisa records 1.18% of the market, followed by Claro TV (1.13%) and TVCable Satelital (0.95%).
Recently, Univisa users reported that the company could stop offering its DTH service, although, up to now, no company executives have expressed themselves about it. In addition, from Etapa they have recently confirmed that their DTH operations will be discontinued on November 30th.
