According to the latest data reported by the Agência Nacional de Telecomunicações in Brazil, the entity in charge of regulating the telecommunications market in that country, the pay TV market ended in May with a total of 13,994 million subscribers, thus reporting similar figures to those of April 2012. According to Anatel, the country’s pay TV market lost 156 thousand customers during the fifth month of 2021. The subscriber base in Brazil has been below 15 million since November 2020.
The Brazilian regulator has also reported that the numbers reported by the pay TV market in May are similar to those of April 2012. In addition, so far this year, the area has already lost 835 thousand customers, which makes an average of 167 thousand fewer subscribers per month.
The operators with the greatest subscribers loss during May were Claro (America Móvil) and Sky (AT&T). According to Anatel, Claro lost 77.6 thousand clients, and ended May with 6.6 million subscribers. In turn, of the 77.6 thousand clients already mentioned, 53.6 thousand belong to its cable base, and 21.2 thousand to that of DTH. Sky ranked second, ending May with a total of 4.18 million customers.
Vivo (Telefonica) has also experienced the same situation, although, in its case, it was a 13 thousand subscribers loss, which made it end the fifth month of 2021 with 1,197 million customers. The only operator that managed to reverse the trend and make a positive balance was Oi (Grupo Oi), with 8 thousand more subscribers, a figure that raises its base to 1,745 thousand pay TV customers.
