According to Anatel data, Brazilian market lost 550 thousand pay TV subscribers in 2018 and decreased in 17.57 million. Largest operators (Claro, Sky, Telefonica, Algar) all declined with the only exception of Oi, which increased slightly. Among the biggest falls is the evangelical DTH Nossa TV, which ended the year with a third of its subscribers, and the growth star was Brisanet, which doubled its clients.
In the opposite direction that the rest of the market, Oi had been growing monthly, but in December it also lost a few clients and ended the year with 1.6 million subscribers, almost 100 thousand more than the previous year. Despite the strong Brazilian evangelical churches political size, Nossa TV had a strong fall in July, from 123 thousand to 48 thousand subscribers, and ended with just over 46 thousand. Some small operators reversed the trend and grew. The most notable case is Brisanet, an ISP located in the country’s northeast that deployed FTTH. It went from 40 thousand subscribers to almost 90 thousand in a year.
In 2018, operator Claro TV lost 41 thousand clients and recorded 1.54 million subscribers at the end of the year. Cable operator Net recorder 30.5 thousand fewer and ended with 7.06 million. The two Claro Brazil’s operations lost 71.6 thousand clients in December, and the lost was 470 thousand subscribers throughout the year (mostly belonging to DTH area, where 360 thousand subscribers less were recorded).
In December, Sky increased 48 thousand subscribers and ended the year with 5.28 million, although it lost 77 thousand clients in the whole year. Vivo lost subscribers in the last month too, and ended 2018 with 1,566 million. And, despite the slight annual increment, Oi recorded a 236 subscribers fall, which made it end last year with 1,601 million. Algar, meanwhile, suffered a 15 thousand subscribers lost and ended with a 83.8 thousand clients base. Other operators add 40 thousand subscribers.
