The Court of Justice of the Andean Community (CAN in Spanish) has established that pay TV operators in Colombia must be authorized by RCN and Caracol to broadcast their signals in HD. Thus, the international body confirmed the decision previously taken by the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce (SIC).
According to the Andean Community, “Broadcasters enjoy exclusive rights over their own signals, having the power to authorize or ban their broadcasting on cable services”.
The long-standing conflict over HD transmissions began in April 2014 when the two national private free-to-air networks decided to cancel the broadcast of their high definition channels on the Pay TV operators’ lineups, claiming they wanted to charge the HD versions.
However, in September 2014 the National Television Authority (ANTV) ordered RCN and Caracol to restore the signal.
