After receiving the authorization of the National Teleccomunications Commision (Conatel, by its initials in Spanish), the main Venezuelan telecommunications operators increased the prices of all their services since November 1st. As reported by the local media, the cost of mobile services and Internet raised 300%, reaching 1000% for some plans. For Pay TV, the prices were increased between 100% and 165%. Even the state companies Cantv and Movilnet increased the cost of their fees.
The percentages in the increases were high given that prices had been frozen for over a year. During that period, the companies had announced several times the increase in rates but the regulator always suspended the measure.
Amongst the private operators with more subscribers in Venezuela, DirecTV used this situation to launch new plans, allowing the users to remain in the same plan with the increased price or to opt for a new one. Movistar and Intercable only applied a higher rate for the plans they already had.
