Pitter Rodriguez, Head of Sports Partnerships Latam at Twitter, spoke in an exclusive interview during the course of the conference NexTV Series South America on the importance of live sports, the agreements for the region and the growth of eSports.
“Twitter entered sports broadcasts because we saw that large part of the conversations on the platform were about sports,” explained the executive.
-What advantage does Twitter have in the world of sports?
Twitter is a live platform, in real time. For this reason, any type of live transmission that we offer is natural for our users.
-What new agreements are you generating the region?
In Latin America, we are working with several possibilities. We already had our first live soccer match on Twitter, a couple of months ago, the CONCACAF Champions League final, exclusively for the United States but it was a game between two Mexican teams (Tigres and Pachuca). We are working hard to announce new agreements very briefly in Argentina, in Mexico especially and some in Brazil.
-What are the most commented sports on the platform?
In Latin America, 75% of the comments or conversations about sports are about football. As for American sports, in Mexico is the NFL and throughout the region the NBA. A modality that is growing a lot, in some countries surpassing even American sports is the eSports.
– What is the potential of eSports in Latin America?
The potential of eSports is huge bearing in mind that large parts of Twitter users are millennials. The interest for this sports modality is growing a lot. In the United States is already a total success, in Latin American markets such as Brazil is also a success, and is growing quite a lot in markets like Argentina, Mexico and others in the region.
I think brands, potential sponsors are also already seeing the potential of eSports, not just traditional brands linked with technology but companies, in general, interested in talking to this millennial audience that likes this new sports modality.
