Oi combines DTH and OTT to grow in Brazilian market

Brazilian telecommunications company Oi reached 100,000 activations in one month of its new Oi Total Play service, which allows broadband customers to access digital platforms from Discovery, ESPN, FOX Networks Group Brazil (FNG), HBO, Sony and Viacom, without subscribing to traditional pay TV.

Oi’s Director of Products and Content, Roberto Guenzburger, said during his participation in the event Latin American Satellite Congress in Brazil that the figure is twice as large as the number of net activations on the traditional pay TV platform via DTH, reported local site Teletime.

However, DTH remains fundamental in the company’s strategy, so Oi decided to combine TV with OTT. According to the executive, Oi’s convergent packages (broadband, cellular, TV) helped to maintain the fixed customer base and fot this reason the traditional pay TV service has been increasing its number of subscribers, in contrast to what happens in the market.

Oi announced the launch of Oi Total Play in July this year. The goal is to serve a new segment of broadband customers who want access to high-value content anytime, anywhere, but have little time to watch TV in a conventional way.

Oi also has a multi-screen VOD service with more than 30,000 titles and 45 channels, of which 25 are linear. It is available not only for its fiber customers but also for the DTH subscriber base.
