Netflix plans to program 1,000 hours of original content in 2017, more than double Netflix’s current original lineup, said Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos, in a conference held in New York. The giant streaming service currently has 30 original scripted series in different stages of production. Next year, Netflix is planning to premiere 20 unscripted shows, including the series “Ultimate Beastmaster”, produced by Sylvester Stallone.
According to the executive, unscripted TV shows are “a very interesting business”. Sarandos said the company is focusing on shows that are “more likely to travel internationally”, such as “Ultimate Beastmaster”, which will feature athletes of six different countries, Variety reported.
In addition to unscripted TV shows, in 2017 Netflix plans to release original series such as “Santa Clarita Diet”, with Drew Barrymore and David Fincher’s “Mindhunter”, mong others.
Moreover, Sarandos reiterated that Netflix plans to spend USD 6 billion on original content in 2017, up from USD 5 million this year. Netflix wants that 50% of its catalog to be original content in the near future.
