Megacable drops Televisa channels

Mexican largest cable operator, Megacable, has decided to drop 14 channels of Televisa Networks effective September 9. Both companies confirm the decision.

The channels are Telehit, Distrito Comedia, Ritmoson, Unicable, Las estrellas, Foro TV, Tiin, De película, Golden, Golden Edge, Gala TV, Bandamax, Canal 5 and TL Novelas. In a statement, Televisa said that this was a “unilateral decision”.

“Televisa regrets Megacable’s decision, which denies its customers the most popular channels in entertainment, sports and news”, the company added.

In turn, the Marketing Director of Megacable, Gerardo Seifer, told El Financiero newspaper that the cost of Televisa channels “exceeds the industry standards.” Seifer also said, “Televisa forced operators to carry all signals, of which more than 50 percent have low rating”.

According to the executive, the decision to withdraw the channels coincides with the expiration of the contract signed by the companies, which was not renewed due to “Televisa’s decision to not negotiate the cost in Mexican pesos.”

In a separate statement, Megacable informed its clients that Televisa channels will be replaced by Multipremier, Multicinema, Cinelatino, Pasiones, Hola TV, Mexico Travel, El Financiero Bloomberg, Film&Arts, MTV Hits, Beat Box and VR Plus.

Televisa Networks is the division responsible for the production and distribution of channels for the pay TV market. At the end of Q216 Megacable had 3 million pay TV customers in Mexico.
