La Liga prepares for TV rights auction

The president of Spanish Soccer League La Liga, Javier Tebas, participated this week in an event in Madrid, in which he analyzed the evolution and the current scenario of audiovisual rights – which includes now the participation of OTT services – and responded to the criticism of the telcos about the price of the rights.
“If it seems expensive, then you need not buy it, we have different strategies and if the auction is declared void nothing will happen”, this would mean that “we will have to bring forward a few years our own exploitation model,” said the executive during the event, titled ” Hacia un nuevo modelo de entretenimiento “, according to El Español.
According to Tebas, by 2030 the OTT will lead 80% of the market. “We want the OTT to enter into the rights of La Liga,” the executive continued, “but we do not believe that prices will rise due to their participation, basically because their model is different from that of Telcos, which sell exclusivity and can pay more”.
According to the executive, the current scenario has changed with the arrival of OTT entertainment players. The president of LaLiga does not believe that Amazon or Facebook would buy all rights, but some package or special content.
LaLiga will soon open the auction to award rights for the next three seasons. The entity aims to obtain €1.3 billion (USD 1.6 billion) for each of the three seasons.
