Chilean Pay TV market reaches 3.4 million subscribers in Q318

According to statistics presented by the Undersecretariat of Telecommunications (Subtel), the Chilean pay TV market recorded 3.36 million subscribers at the end of Q318, up 3.4% when compared to previous year. During the period, DirecTV consolidated as the second operator.
VTR, the market leader, reported 1.08 million customers (32.2% market share), while DirecTV, which in Q118 reached the second place, surpassing Movistar, remains in that position with more than 683,000 subscribers (20.3%).
According to Subtel data, in the last year DirecTV grew 9.6%, driven by the World Cup. Movistar, on the other hand, recorded a fall of 0.6% compared to Q317 and reached 669,000 subscribers (19.9% share). In this market, as in others in Latin America, Telefónica’s priority is no longer its DTH service and the strategy focuses now on IPTV and OTT Movistar Play. The fourth market operator, Claro (América Móvil), ended the period with 404,000 clients (12% share).
