US e-commerce and technology company Amazon surprisingly launched its new user-generated video service Amazon Video Direct, with various options for producers to monetize their content.
For each title, users can choose how they wish to raise their revenues, based on playback hours by members of the Amazon Prime service, either in the form of monthly subscription, rental, purchase, ad impressions, or a combination of these.
In addition, the company will distribute USD 1,000,000 per month as a bonus to the top 100 titles included with Prime to create a portfolio of Amazon Video Direct Stars. This extra money will be determined based on the level of customer engagement. All titles included with Prime are automatically eligible.
In order to compete directly with OTT Netflix, Amazon launched in April the option to access their own OTT Amazon Video for a monthly subscription of USD 8, previously only accessible through the annual membership to Amazon Prime of USD 100. It is only available in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Austria, Germany and –soon– India.
